As a Learning Support Assistant, you’ll work directly with students with developmental disabilities, helping them thrive academically, socially, and as active members of the campus community.
This hands-on role provides an excellent opportunity to develop leadership, communication, mentorship, and problem-solving skills while supporting students as they navigate post-secondary life. You’ll help students participate in classes, engage in campus activities, build social connections, access resources, and develop the confidence and independence needed to achieve their goals.
Working closely with the Learning Support Coordinator and Accessibility Services staff, you’ll be part of creating a welcoming and inclusive campus where every student has the opportunity to succeed.
This position is ideal for students interested in education, psychology, social work, healthcare, human services, disability studies, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, recreation therapy, or anyone passionate about supporting others and promoting inclusion.
We are collaborating with NAIT, MacEwan and King’s University. These positions are open to current post-secondary students who may be in classes at these campuses, or those who are not currently in school.
Key Responsibilities
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will:
- Attend classes alongside assigned students, modelling effective classroom participation and helping them understand course expectations
- Support students in organizing coursework, understanding assignments, and developing effective study habits
- Encourage the use of academic accommodations and assist students in communicating with instructors when needed
- Reinforce learning strategies such as note-taking, time management, task planning, and prioritization
- Accompany students to clubs, campus events, and extracurricular activities, helping them feel comfortable and connected
- Foster positive peer interactions and support students in developing social communication skills in real-world settings
- Introduce students to campus resources, spaces, services, and opportunities that align with their interests and goals
- Assist students in accessing campus supports, including Accessibility Services, academic advising, library resources, and student wellness services
- Encourage self-advocacy, decision-making, and problem-solving while promoting student independence
- Model positive academic, social, and professional behaviours in classroom and campus environments
- Maintain regular communication with the Learning Support Coordinator and Accessibility Services staff regarding student progress, achievements, and concerns
Qualifications
We’re looking for compassionate, reliable, and enthusiastic students who are passionate about helping others succeed.
- Current post-secondary student in good academic standing (preferred but may consider alumni or recent grads)
- Experience working with autistic individuals or people with disabilities is considered an asset.
- Interest in disability inclusion, neurodiversity, education, psychology, social work, healthcare, student development, or related fields
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Comfort working with and supporting diverse learners
- Patience, reliability, professionalism, and a positive attitude
- Ability to model positive academic habits, organization, and time management skills
- Clean Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Record Check
- Valid Standard First Aid with Level C CPR & AED certification
- Previous experience in mentoring, tutoring, coaching, volunteering, leadership, or peer support roles is beneficial
Training and ongoing support will be provided to help you succeed in the role.

Compensation and Hours
Part-time hours: 20 hours average per week
Salary: From $21.87 per hour
Schedule (various options depending on student placement and campus):
Student 1: (NAIT)
- Monday: 10:00 am to noon
- Tuesday: 9:00 am to 10:00am
- Wednesday: 10:00 am to 5:00pm
- Thursday: 10:00 am to noon
- Friday: 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
- The student will require 5 to 10 additional hours with the LSA that can be done at any time that works for the LSA and student
Student 2: (MacEwan)
- Monday: 8:00 am – 11:00 am
- Tuesday: 8:00 am – 9:30 am
- Wednesday: 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
- Thursday 8:00 am to 9:30 am
- Friday 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
- The student will require 5 to 10 additional hours with the LSA that can be done at any time that works for the LSA and student
Student 3: (MacEwan)
- Monday: 8:00 am – 9:00am and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm
- Wed: 8:00 am – 9:00 am and 11:00 am to 12:30 pm
- Friday: 8:00 am – 9:00 am and 11:00 am to 12:30 pm
- The student will require 5 to 10 additional hours with the LSA that can be done at any time that works for the LSA and student.
Student 4: (Kings University)
- Monday: 10:00 to noon, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
- Tuesday (noon to 3:30)
- Wed 10:00 am – 11:00 am, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm (3 hours)
- Thursday: noon to 3:30 pm
- Friday: 10 am – 11 am, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
- The student will require 5 to 10 additional hours with the LSA that can be done at any time that works for the LSA and student
